As much as I dislike the politics of Mitch McConnell and John Boehner, I honestly don't think they are out to deliberately harm the nation's economy to get their way.
But, the extremists in their party seem to be perfectly willing to trash the current order so they can supposedly build their ideal nation out of the wreckage.
What passes for "moderate Republicans" today would do better to form a coalition with moderate Democrats and pass a bill that makes cuts to spending, eliminates the most outrageous tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations and raises the debt limit.
The majority of voters would appreciate a responsible negotiated settlement and remember those members of Congress who supported it.
Sooner or later, leadership in the Republican Party is going to have to face up to the fact that they openly embraced people who espoused long ago discredited positions such as a toleration of child labor, private racial discrimination and religious zealots using government to advance their religion.
If they continue to appease their extremists, they will suffer the fate of all appeasers. The moderates will be fully pushed out of the Republican party. It is ironic that the party that has always been quick to charge the opposition with appeasing the nation's enemies can't see that they are doing it themselves. The extremists in the Republican Party are no friends of a stable American democracy.
